A Country Utterly Divided

A couple of years ago, the Editor of the New Vision News paper, a government owned one, was gracious enough to publish my article, “Why Museveni”s praise drums are fading!” If attention was given to the thought behind the article refection rather than an urgency to kill the messenger would have served our country better.

The country has emerged from what has been the most fractitious elections with unparalled levels of state inspired violence, kidnaps, torture and unfortunately, as confirmed by President Museveni targeted killings. In broad day light in November 2020 people were shot on the streets of Kampala and not sime backstreet in Mogadishu. There was no hiding or whitewashing and all decent folk ought to fear the path we are resolutely embarked on.

The consequences of the violence was an election despicably lacking in credibility. A people with deep resentment hidden behind stoic faces. En masse almost all NRM leaning candidates , in central region, fell to the red wave and the people power movement. In Busoga too the results showed a dwindling of the fortunes of the National Resistance Movement.

There is increased militarization of state affairs and we are literally on the precipice of a great abyss. The questions we have to ask is how long can these state of affairs be maintained.

The President has made claims on his readiness to dialogue. But the words don’t match the spirit. And worst, his record on dialoging is paved with “win loose.” Do you remember the Nairobi peace jokes! Or the failed Kony talks, what about talks with the people of Kasese?

Be that as it may we need a cooling off period to heal the wounds and unite the people of the Republic of Uganda.th
